What is a sponsorship license and does my company need one?

Sponsorship License allows employers based in the UK to recruit non- British workers under the UK’s points-based immigration system, the main routes are the following:

1. Skilled worker visa
2. Global Business Mobility visas
3. Temporary worker visas

To employ workers from abroad under either of the above listed visa, the employer must apply for a sponsorship licence. Since after 2020 and the end of the Brexit transition period, you will likely now need a sponsor licence to employ newly arriving EU migrants.

If you company intends to hire workers from abroad, it is crucial for you to apply for sponsorship license ahead of time. Once granted, you will be given certificates of sponsorship that you will then be able to assign to your overseas workers.

The Home Office requires employers to meet certain eligibility and suitability requirement to succeed with their application and supply relevant documents along with covering letter explaining company’s background, reasons for making the application and how they meet the criteria. This would allow the HO to conduct detailed assessment and decide whether a license should be granted.

The company must also have relevant personnel who would be able to fill the required sponsorship management roles.

It is imperative that business ensure they fully understand their reporting and management duties prior to making the application and also the implications for their business if case their sponsor license is suspended or revoked by the Home Office.
