Inside the Law – Alfred James and Co Solicitors Work Experience Program

Inside the law is a three (3) Month Legal Experience for Future Solicitors
Gain hands-on insight into key areas of legal practice: Conveyancing, Personal Injury, Housing & Housing Disrepair, Family Law, Private Client Work, and Litigation work.

Duration & Commitment

Length: 3 months, can be extended subject to mutual agreement.
Schedule: 3 days per week (fixed but flexible days weekly to be agreed in advance)
Location: Alfred James House, 406a Brighton Road, South Croydon, CR2 6AN
Commitment: Full participation required for the entire programme
Start Date: [To be decided upon]

This programme is designed for individuals at any stage of their legal journey who are serious about qualifying as a solicitor via the SQE (Solicitor Qualifying Examination) route.

Ideal candidates must:

Hold a law degree, qualifying law degree, or equivalent legal qualification
Be aiming to qualify as a solicitor via the SQE pathway
Be highly motivated and committed
Have a strong interest in gaining practical experience across multiple areas of law
Be eager to learn and develop professional and legal skills
Be able to take instructions and work independently
Be comfortable working in a professional office environment
Be interested in developing expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Conveyancing Law
- Personal Injury
- Housing & Housing Disrepair
- Family Law
- Private Client (e.g., wills, probate, lasting powers of attorney)
- Litigation Work

What You’ll Gain

Real-world experience in four key practice areas
Training on legal procedures, case management systems, and client care
Opportunities to shadow solicitors, attend client meetings (where appropriate), and observe legal proceedings in court.
Hands-on involvement in:
- Drafting correspondence and legal documents
- Legal research and case analysis
- Administrative and case preparation tasks
Participation in and leadership of in-house training sessions and workshops
Exposure to the SRA Solicitor Qualifying Examination (SQE) framework and qualification routes
Personal development support and mentoring from legal professionals

Your Role & Responsibilities

Attend your assigned days each week, fully committed and punctual
Journalise weekly tasks and attend training sessions as directed by your supervising team
Be proactive in taking on tasks and asking questions
Support casework across departments under solicitor supervision
Lead or co-lead internal training sessions or discussions on legal topics
Follow confidentiality and data protection policies at all times
Complete end-of-programme reflective report or presentation on your learning experience

I am not a type of person like to write review, but my experience with this solicitor is truly overwhelming that I decided to do it. I came to Alfred James a few years ago for sorting out my mortgage problem ( I needed to remove my Ex name from mortgage ). It was a really stressful time when I tried to find a good and honest solicitor. I went to ask a few solicitors and they gave me different advice which was not suitable for my case. The quotes from them were  over £1500.  I was so lost and not sure what to do.  when I called Alfred James, I came to see Ade, I felt like finding hope in the dead end. He is kind, helpful but what is more, very professional, he knew my case was not as complicated as other solicitor said. And the problem was sorted with a cost of £250.
