Inside the Law – Alfred James and Co Solicitors Work Experience Program

Inside the law is a three (3) Month Legal Experience for Future Solicitors
Gain hands-on insight into key areas of legal practice: Personal Injury, Housing & Disrepair, Family Law, and Private Client Work.

Duration & Commitment

• Length: 3 months
• Schedule: 3 days per week (fixed days agreed in advance)
• Location: Alfred James House, ​406a Brighton Road, ​South Croydon, CR2 6AN
• Commitment: Full participation required for the entire programme
• Start Date: [To be decided upon]

This programme is designed for individuals at any stage of their legal journey who are serious about qualifying as a solicitor via the SQE (Solicitor Qualifying Examination) route.

Ideal candidates must:

• Hold a law degree, qualifying law degree, or equivalent legal qualification
• Be aiming to qualify as a solicitor via the SQE pathway
• Be highly motivated and committed
• Have a strong interest in gaining practical experience across multiple areas of law
• Be eager to learn and develop professional and legal skills
• Be able to take instructions and work independently
• Be comfortable working in a professional office environment
• Be interested in developing expertise in one or more of the following areas:
  • Personal Injury
  • Housing & Disrepair
  • Family Law
  • Private Client (e.g., wills, probate, lasting powers of attorney)

What You’ll Gain

• Real-world experience in four key practice areas
• Training on legal procedures, case management systems, and client care
• Opportunities to shadow solicitors, attend client meetings (where appropriate), and observe legal proceedings in court.
• Hands-on involvement in:
  • Drafting correspondence and legal documents
  • Legal research and case analysis
  • Administrative and case preparation tasks
• Participation in and leadership of in-house training sessions and workshops
• Exposure to the SRA Solicitor Qualifying Examination (SQE) framework and qualification routes
• Personal development support and mentoring from legal professionals

Your Role & Responsibilities

• Attend your assigned days each week, fully committed and punctual
• Journalise weekly tasks and attend training sessions as directed by your supervising team
• Be proactive in taking on tasks and asking questions
• Support casework across departments under solicitor supervision
• Lead or co-lead internal training sessions or discussions on legal topics
• Follow confidentiality and data protection policies at all times
• Complete end-of-programme reflective report or presentation on your learning experience
